If you have received support from the Fulton or Hinckley Chair, please write a thank you letter to Brother and Sister Fulton or the Hinckley family, respectively, within two weeks of notification. Here are some guidelines to help you write an effective letter.
- Paper: as this is a professional letter, stick with nice stationary. If you do not have any on hand, the Dean’s Office (990 SWKT) has some you may use for this purpose.
- Handwritten vs. Typed: if your handwriting is legible, a handwritten note is a nice touch. If you are uncomfortable doing this or think your handwriting is difficult to decipher, feel free to type your letter but make sure you personally sign your name at the bottom.
- Addressing the letter: if you received a grant from the Fulton Chair, please address the letter to “Brother and Sister Fulton.” If you received a grant from the Hinckley Chair, please address the letter to “The Hinckley Family.”
- Body of the Letter:
- Thank the donor. Let them know how the funds have helped you personally, but remember to keep it professional. Also let them know a little about your internship (where it is, what you will be doing, etc.)
- Tell the donor a little about yourself – your hometown, what you are studying and why, and where you are in your studies.
- Let the donor know what your future plans are. What do you plan to do with your degree? How will you give back to the community, BYU, and other students some day? Donors like to hear how their gifts lead to greater things.
- Thank the donor again.
- Signing the note: regardless of whether your write or type your letter, a handwritten signature is always a nice gesture.
- Spell check, spell check, and spell check again.
- Deliver or mail your letter to Kim Reid (990 SWKT Provo, UT 84602).
- Questions, need help getting started, or would like someone to proof your letter? Contact Kim Reid at (801)422-1320 or kim_reid@byu.edu.
