BYLAWS for the BSW Student Association
I. Purpose and Objective of Organization/Mission Statement
The purpose of the BSW Student Association is to develop professional awareness concerning the field of Social Work, to develop cohesion among members of the association and the Social Work faculty, to provide knowledge to students about the BSW Program and to provide assistance to those interested in being admitted into the program. The Association will also strive to inform other individuals of the Social Work Profession.
II. Commitment to BYU, LDS, and Social Work Standards
The BSW Student Association will abide and uphold the policies and standards of BYU and the LDS Church. However, the committee will work towards policy improvement as deemed appropriate by the Association. The Association will also abide and uphold the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers.
III. Organizational Framework
A. The structural framework of the BSW Association will consist of :
Student Representatives (5) - to form a committee to work together in planning and directing club meetings. To divide up responsibilities of this committee to accomplish all needs, objectives, and goals that are set. To preside over separate committees that are organized to accomplish the needs of the Association.
1. Chairman (1) - to direct committee meetings, to be a communication center for the Representatives, and to be in close contact with the faculty advisors.
2. Faculty Liaison (1) - to attend faculty meetings, to be aware of the events going on in the School of Social Work, and to offer to the faculty the perspective of the Student Association and its Representatives.
3. Historian (1) - shall act as historian to summarize the history of the association at the end of each semester as well as supervise the documentation of all activities and events.
4. Treasurer ( 1) - shall act as treasurer by being responsible for the collection and disbursement of Association monies.
5. Secretary (1) - shall act as secretary by being responsible for the minutes of the meetings, newsletters, and any other information as needed by the members.
B. Student Representatives (5) shall be elected positions. The elections shall be presided over by the Faculty Advisors. The election procedures shall be conducted in accordance with the following guidelines:
1. Nominations for Representatives shall be accepted from the BSW Student Association membership during the first meeting of the Fall Semester or at the vacancy of a Representative position. These nominations shall be collected, written down, and then voted upon by the membership present.
2. Newly elected officers shall assume their positions at their first scheduled meeting with the faculty advisors.
C. All Student Representatives (5) must be accepted into the BYU School of Social Work undergraduate program and must hold junior or senior standing , with at least two Representatives from the Junior class.
D. Positions within the Representatives' committee will be selected by that group according to the talents, desires, and time constraints of each individual. Offices shall change because of vacancy or as needed to most effectively meet the needs of the BSW Student Association.
IV. Club Membership Requirements
Members shall be full-time, registered students at BYU from any discipline; however, as stated above, representatives shall only be students accepted into the BYU School of Social Work undergraduate program.
V. Role of Faculty Advisor(s)
The faculty advisor(s) shall stand as a resource of advice to the BSW Student Association in matters of policy, goals, and objectives. He/she shall also act as an additional liaison between the Association and the social work faculty in regard to the foregoing matters.
VI. Finances
A. Dues shall consist of an established fee per member/per semester as determined annually by the association members.
B. Disbursal of funds shall be handled through the treasurer as approved by the Representatives Committee.
VII. Amending Procedures
The Constitution of the BSW Student Association shall be amended as deemed necessary by the elected representatives of the organization. Amendments are subject to the approval of the members of the BSW Student Association.
