Washington Seminar Stories

Washington Seminar at Brigham Young University
had another successful fall 2007 semester, with it twenty-nine
well qualified student interns. As a campus-wide internship
program, the Washington Seminar helps to place students
in a variety of internships in Washington, D.C.Washington
Seminar student interns worked in all three branches of
the U.S. government, for elected officials in both the
Democratic and the Republican parties, and in numerous
non-profit and for-profit enterprises in the private sector
during the fall 2007 semester.
The Executive branch was served by five
BYU interns. The Council for Economic Advisers, National
Defense University, National Museum of American History,
US Department of Commerce, and The Smithsonian Associates
stood out among the institutions.
Congress was the most popular branch of
government with seven interns who served in the offices
of one House and five Senate members including Senator
Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader. Another intern
served in the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
In other fields, the list of non-profit
organizations that interns worked for included the public
policy think-tanks American Enterprise Institute for Public
Policy Research and the Center for Strategic and International
Studies. Foreshadowing 2008 as both a presidential and
congressional election year, one student also interned
with the public opinion research firm American Viewpoint.
Washington Seminar students continue to work for a diverse
number of organizations and have excelled in their respective
internships.
